Mobilization of National Guard Troops for Immigration Support
Approximately 1,700 National Guard troops are scheduled to be deployed across 19 states to assist the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in immigration enforcement efforts. This activation, one of the largest in recent years, will occur from late August through mid-November, with Texas expected to have the most significant number of troops. While the National Guard will not be making arrests, their role will include administrative support such as case management, transportation, and processing duties, allowing ICE agents to focus on enforcement. The troops will operate under Title 32 authority, meaning they will remain under state governors' command while working closely with DHS. The exact number of troops assigned to each state and the duration of their deployments are still being determined. Importantly, this mobilization is not related to President Trump's federal crime initiatives in Washington, D.C., but is a separate operation aimed at supporting ICE with logistical tasks. Training for some troops is set to begin shortly.
